3 Amazing recipes to make Millet Treats at home

Making millet-based treats for your dogs is a great idea! We at goodpup believe that millets should be included as part of a pup's everyday diet and we would like to help our pup parents do that by giving you 3 creative recipes.  Millet is a healthy, gluten-free grain that provides essential nutrients like magnesium, phosphorus, and B vitamins. Here's how you can prepare millet-based treats at home:

Recipe 1: Millet and Peanut Butter Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked millet
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (unsweetened, unsalted, and xylitol-free)
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree (optional, for added flavor and nutrients)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or rice flour for a gluten-free option)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the cooked millet, peanut butter, pumpkin puree, and egg. Mix well.
  3. Add Flour: Gradually add the flour until the dough is firm but not overly sticky.
  4. Roll and Shape: Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes.
  5. Bake: Place the treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and firm.
  6. Cool: Allow the treats to cool completely before serving.

Recipe 2: Millet and Apple Dog Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked millet
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup grated carrot
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup oat flour (or ground rolled oats)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine Ingredients: Mix the cooked millet, applesauce, grated carrot, and egg in a bowl.
  3. Add Flour: Gradually incorporate the oat flour until the dough comes together.
  4. Shape the Treats: Roll the dough into small balls or flatten them into discs.
  5. Bake: Arrange on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  6. Cool: Let them cool completely before giving them to your dog.

Recipe 3: Millet and Chicken Meatballs

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked millet
  • 1/2 cup cooked, shredded chicken (unseasoned)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup grated zucchini or sweet potato
  • 1–2 tablespoons oat or rice flour (as needed)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix Ingredients: Combine millet, shredded chicken, egg, and grated zucchini in a bowl. If the mixture is too wet, add flour until it holds together.
  3. Form Meatballs: Shape the mixture into small balls.
  4. Bake: Place the meatballs on a greased baking sheet and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until firm and lightly browned.
  5. Cool: Allow to cool fully before serving.

Storage Tips:

  • Store the treats in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
  • For longer storage, freeze them for up to 3 months and thaw as needed.

Notes:

  • Always introduce new ingredients gradually to ensure your dog doesn’t have any adverse reactions.
  • Avoid ingredients like onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, and excessive salt, as they are harmful to dogs.
  • Adjust treat sizes according to your dog's size and calorie needs.
